No evidence that conifer biochar impacts soil functioning by serving as microbial refugia in boreal soils

چکیده

It is well established that application of biochar to soils can promote soil fertility, which ultimately may enhance plant growth. While many mechanisms have been proposed explain this, one specific mechanism, the “microbial refugia hypothesis,” suggests provide physical protection for microbe from microfauna otherwise exert top-down control on microbial biomass and activity. We tested hypothesis by incubating two boreal with without derived a wood mixture tree species (Picea abies Pinus sylvestris), nematodes. measured phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) as relative measure biomass, several variables indicative activity, including extractable nutrient concentrations (NH4+, NO3−, PO4−), heterotrophic N2-fixation, respiration. Contrary our expectations, we found itself did not stimulate or Furthermore, nematode addition stimulated rather than depressed bacterial PLFA groups. Finally, interactive effects between treatment never worked in way supported hypothesis. Our findings suggest typical applied same stimulatory effect activity has shown some other ecosystems, enhanced growth response sometimes observed environments likely due mechanisms, such direct supply amelioration pH.

Soil detritivore functioning in heterogeneously contaminated soils

Spatial heterogeneity in abiotic and biotic factors is an important habitat feature of ecosystems as it facilitates potential refuges for less favourable conditions. Heterogeneously contaminated soils can affect specific groups of organisms and their functioning, both directly by toxic effects and by avoidance of contaminated micro-sites. We tested the hypothesis that horizontally heterogeneous...

Effect of Soil pH Increase by Biochar on NO, N2O and N2 Production during Denitrification in Acid Soils

Biochar (BC) application to soil suppresses emission of nitrous- (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO), but the mechanisms are unclear. One of the most prominent features of BC is its alkalizing effect in soils, which may affect denitrification and its product stoichiometry directly or indirectly. We conducted laboratory experiments with anoxic slurries of acid Acrisols from Indonesia and Zambia and two ...

Biochar Impacts on Soil Physical Properties and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Biochar, a co-product of a controlled pyrolysis process, can be used as a tool for sequestering C in soil to offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and as a soil amendment. Whereas the impacts of biochar application on soil chemical properties are widely known, the research information on soil physical properties is scarce. The objectives of this review are to (i) synthesize available data on s...

Biochar Application to Soils

Biochar application to soils is being considered as a means to sequester carbon (C) while concurrently improving soil functions. The main focus of this report is providing a critical scientific review of the current state of knowledge regarding the effects of biochar application to soils on soil properties and functions. Wider issues, including atmospheric emissions and occupational health and ...
